Digital Parents August Blog Carnival…. Finally :)

Digital Parents Blog Carnival

Welcome to the Digital Parents August Blog Carnival!! It feels like forever since I put my name down on the list to host the blog carnival and ironically, I’m hosting for a month where everything has gotten in the way of my own blogging, so I can’t even link up one of my own posts :(

So, get comfy. Grab a cuppa and a snack. Sit back and enjoy reading these awesome blog posts from July 2013.  I’m sure you will laugh, cry, learn and say “doh” a few times before you get through the list.

Enjoy

Nat xx

Sunday Session–Back to School

It was back to school this week for 2 of my boys. I’m finding it really hard to believe that I only have 1 in primary school and 1 in high school now. Today, my Sunday Session is a reflection on my school days based on the years my boys are in this year.

Jacob is in Grade 2 this year and a few decades ago I was too.

According to Ken’s Music Report, the #1 single the year I was in Grade 2 was “You’re the One That I Want” by Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta

Christian in starting Year 10 and sometime back in the ‘80’s, I did too. The #1 song that year was “You’re the Voice” by John Farnham.

10 Things About Summer - Listmania 2

For this weeks Listmania we have been asked what are our 5 favourite and 5 least favourite things about our current season.  At the moment it is summer in Australia.  Not my favourite season – I actually prefer any other season! I did manage to find 5 things I do like about summer.  They are:

1. Watching my boys swimming in the pool

2. Air conditioning

3. Summer fruits – yummo!!!!

                                      {Image Source}

4. Eating outside

5. Summer shoes

Five things I like least about summer are:

1. HEAT!!!!!

2. Bushfires

3. Spiders that decide to keep cool in my house – eeeeeewwwwwww

4. Cricket taking over my TV

5. Sunburn

I decided than none of my least favourite deserved a picture since they are things I don’t like :)

Sunday Sessions

Today, I’m linking up with Sunday Sessions hosted by Cass Can Sew.

I have a guilty little pleasure that I indulge in every night when I drive to work – Richard Mercer’s “Love Song Dedications” on Mix.  The few weeks he was off the air over the holidays, I station flicked or popped a CD in my car. For the 40 minutes I’m in the car driving to work, I’m in a happy place, listening to his deep, soothing voice and endless love songs. Yes I know I’m a big old sap.

Here are a few of my favourites

I am…..

When I read Eden’s post earlier today and I’ve had words running around my head ever since – just who am I?? I thought about the many words I use to describe myself like mother, wife, nurse and wondered if I am these things because of who I am or do these make me who I am. Honestly, it all became a bit of “what came first, the chicken or the egg” analogy.  So, I delved a little deeper.

I know I have double sided qualities. While I could be described as nurturing, caring, loving, I’m also good in a crisis and can make decisions quickly, which can come across as cold and heartless.  After coming to this conclusion, I decided to make my brain stop hurting and stop thinking of who I am as something that needs to be wrapped in a compact package that makes sense and simply write who I think I am.

I am logical and I need things to make sense.

I like things to be organised – not necessarily all neat and tidy.

I’m a great listener.  I’m also usually the person that won’t burst into tears along with you when you need to let it all out.

I cry at the “Worksafe” ads every time without fail – even if I have changed the channel part way through the ad.

When I love, there’s no halfway. It’s an all or nothing experience.

I believe in spreading your wings and following your dreams.

I’m a vault when is coming to keeping a secret – as long as no one’s going to get hurt along the way.

I am inquisitive and always have the feeling that there is something else I need to learn.

I must use matching shampoo and conditioner.

I think it’s important that I let my children learn from their mistakes.

I am a tv addict.

I love the colour purple.

I am who I am right now.

I am me :)

Meet Me On Monday 23/04/12

Welcome to the 64th edition of
"Meet Me On Monday!"

Blogging  is a funny thing...we tell our most intimate thoughts for all to read  and yet most of the time I find myself sitting and wondering, "who is  this person!?"  I know them...but yet I don't know them!  I want  to know who the person is behind all those words so I thought of a great  way for all of us to "meet" each other!

Every Sunday Never Growing Old will post five get to know you  questions that you can copy and paste into your own Monday post and we  can all learn a little more about each and every one of us!!

Java will add a linky so we can follow who participates and get to know them  better!!  Be sure to link the POST and not just your whole blog!!

Questions:
1.  I keep putting off _________
2.  What is your current weather?
3.  What is the nicest room in your house?
4.  What jewellery do you never take off?
5.  Do you eat a snack before bed?

My Answers
1. I keep putting off _________
Getting rid of Jacob’s baby clothes, cot, etc. I’ve been meaning to do it for ages but just can’t let go of them yet – he’s only 7 :)

Jacob-0-and-7

2. What is your current weather?
As usual for Melbourne it’s all over the flipping place. Today, I started out in 3/4 pants, a t-shirt and thongs and am now wearing a fleecy hoodie, tracksuit pants and socks.
Melbourne Weather

3. What is the nicest room in your house?
That’s really hard at the moment since so many of them have Jeff’s half done renovations in them. Usually, I would easily answer my kitchen but at the moment I have holes in the wall either side of the pantry as Jeff is making it wider and deeper for me :)

4. What jewellery do you never take off?
I seem to always have one necklace that I will wear for ages and ages before changing it. At the moment it is one that Matthew got me for Christmas.IMG_1584

5. Do you eat a snack before bed?
Not really. Occasionally, I will get a craving for something but mostly I’m done after dinner.

Your link MUST include your Meet Me On  Monday post or it will be deleted!  You cannot link up until your post  is complete and posted!

Java has had SEVERAL people link their whole blog and not just the post and it takes a lot of time to go in and correct these so PLEASE link your Meet Me On Monday post!  You know who you are!!

Meet Me On Monday 02/04/2012

Based on the original Meet Me on Monday hosted by Java at Never Growing Old, Acting Balanced will post 5 questions on Sunday evening along with a linky for you to link up your post answers!

Here are today's Questions:

1. Did you prank, get pranked or ignore April Fool's Day?
2. What is the most unusual thing you have in your pantry or refrigerator right now?
3. If you were in the "Miss America" (or another) talent competition, what would your talent be?
4. What is one thing you miss about being a kid?
5. If you HAD to change your name, what would you change it to?

Answer them on your blog and link up - or answer them in the comment section below -

Acting Balanced1. Did you prank, get pranked or ignore April Fool's Day?
I was going to totally ignore it but, with Daylight savings finishing the whole day turning into a prank simply by not changing the kitchen clock – mass confusion over the course of the day :)

2. What is the most unusual thing you have in your pantry or refrigerator right now?
I have a few crayons sitting in the freezer at the moment. They got a little melted and weird looking so I rolled out a but and popped them in. Honestly I had totally forgotten they were in there until I read this question.

3. If you were in the "Miss America" (or another) talent competition, what would your talent be?
Hmmm, there’s nothing that I would usually volunteer to get up and do in front of people but I can burp the alphabet – classy huh!

4. What is one thing you miss about being a kid?
Having my mother clean my room and do my laundry for me.

5. If you HAD to change your name, what would you change it to?
Just my first name right??? I would just change it to my middle name Patrice which I love.

Here's the linky - please answer the questions on your blog and come back and link up!  Then head on out and visit a few other bloggers to Meet them on Monday!

1. How do you like your eggs?
2. Who is the last person you spoke to on the phone?
3. Do you have a place you keep 'junk' in your home?
4. What is on your 'spring cleaning' list?
5. What blog post have you written recently that you'd like more people to know about? (don't forget to link it up)

Acting Balanced

1. How do you like your eggs?
As long as they are cooked I’m not really fussed.

2. Who is the last person you spoke to on the phone?
My son Joshua

3. Do you have a place you keep 'junk' in your home?
The garage is mostly where I store any junk that I don’t want to get rid of. I  have a designated spot in most rooms for “junk” that belongs in that room but just really has no true home

4. What is on your 'spring cleaning' list?
Don’t have a "’spring cleaning’ list at the moment since it’s Autumn here :)

5. What blog post have you written recently that you'd like more people to know about? (don't forget to link it up)

Acting Balanced1. What are your plans for St. Patrick's Day?
I really don’t have any special plans for St. Patricks Day :(

2. What is your favourite room in your house?
At the moment it would be half a room. I love my little office area that is in a little nook at the end of our dining room.

3. What 'gadget' do you have that you can't live without?
It would have to be my iPhone. I {heart} my iPhone and feel completely lost without it.

4. What will your first thought be when you learn that you won a lottery?
We could pay off the mortgage!

5. Other than Acting Balanced and your own, what is your favourite blog to read?
There are so many good ones to choose from and I love reading them all. So, my favourite one this very second (because I was reading a recipe there about an hour ago) is The Organised Housewife.

Acting Balanced

1. What is on your bedside table?
Pretty boring - iPhone dock/clock radio, lamp, hand cream, cordless phone, note paper and pan

2. Hardback, Paperback or E-Reader?
I prefer a “real” book over an e-reader. not fussed on hardback or paperback as long as I can whack it in my handbag.

I’m a coffee girl and love that i can take it with me in pretty and cute mugs :)
IMG_1068[1]
4. How do you like to spend your birthday?
Always with my family.

5. Finish this sentence - I would never be caught dead in…..
Hmmm… I think over the years, I have pretty much worn everything I wouldn’t be caught dead in now. But, I solemnly swear that I will never, ever wear a jumpsuit again (especially a turquoise one, belted at the waist eeekkkk!)

Meet Me On Monday

OK, I know that it’s Wednesday, but I have just found that this meme is now being hosted by Acting Balanced. I really loved doing this meme when Java from Never Growing Old ran it. it’s simple and interesting :)

Acting Balanced

Here are today's Questions:

1. What was the first live concert you ever attended?
2. What colours look best on you?
3. What is one thing about you that most people wouldn't know?
4. Who would you call to be bailed out of jail?
5. What do you think is the greatest invention of your lifetime and why?

My Answers:

1. What was the first live concert you ever attended?
In 1985, I was allowed to attend my first concert with my two best friends, Jo and Ang. They bought me a ticket to John Mellencamp’s Scarecrow Concert in Melbourne. I still remember that they wrapped up the ticket and hid it inside a tampon box, which of course, I opened in the middle of the street :) For your viewing pleasure, I had added a video of “Rain on the Scarecrow” live from Farm Aid. I still {heart} John Mellencamp, and when I grow up, I still might marry him *sigh*

2. What colours look best on you?
Black
, bright blues and purples, I think. If they don’t suit me, I really need to get myself some new friends, because no one has said anything………

3. What is one thing about you that most people wouldn't know?
OK, I’ve sat and pondered this question for ages. Even left the laptop, had dinner, watched TV and then came back to it. And still, nothing! I guess I’m pretty much an open book and will blabber away about anything to anyone :)

4. Who would you call to be bailed out of jail?
Ummmm, maybe I’m not really a grown up, because I would call my Daddy :)

5. What do you think is the greatest invention of your lifetime and why?
Hmmm, with just of 40 years of inventions to choose from, I really want to say something really techy, like laptops, digital cameras or an iPhone (all which I love) But I would have to say, as the mother of five children, the temporal thermometer wins hands down. Why?? Have you ever tried to take the temperature of one of your kids when they aren’t well and wiggle all over the place. Holding a mercury or digital thermometer under their arm or balanced under their tongue really sucks! I have the Microlife Infrared Forehead Thermometer and I love it – too easy peasy to take temps at home now.

Day Twenty-Eight - 30 Day Meme

Day 28 – what’s in my handbag/purse

Well, this may not be to interesting. I recently retired my beloved black Olga Berg Bag as this striking pink one caught my eye.

IMG_0187I have pretty much cleaned out all the junk that  accumulate in my handbag when I switched bags.

IMG_0188

So here it is - looks fairly neat and tidy. Not too much unnecessary crap in there.

IMG_0189

How sad is that?? All I have is:

  • my purse
  • a pack of messy fingers/baby wipes
  • packet of 5 Gum
  • spare change purse
  • Oroton umbrella
  • box of tampons
  • cheque book
  • fold away shopping bag
  • camera
  • perfume
  • container of band aids
  • pen
  • a few receipts
  • flyer for a Halloween disco
  • and a hair tie.

I’m sure if I had got this topic in a months time, the pile would be quite different.

Day Twenty-Seven - 30 Day Meme

Day 27 – my worst habit

Hand’s down it’s smoking. I started my quit campaign on Friday the 22nd of October.  I was really good all weekend, but since I was on a weekend away with the girls, who don’t smoke, it really wasn’t that much of a challenge. After I got home on Sunday afternoon, I lasted until Monday morning - 12:30AM to be exact.

Since that weekend, I can honestly say that I have significantly cut down. Not a non-smoker yet, but I will be.

Day Twenty-Six - 30 Day Meme

Day 26 – your week, in great detail
Monday - a fairly average day, full of general pottering around the house and pick ups and drop offs.
Tuesday - Zachary had an appointment this morning with the Hand Therapist. He has been working with them since he dislocated his finger during PE playing kick ball in August. I dropped him back at school and Joshua and I picked up Jacob from kinder and “did lunch”.
Later in the afternoon, I took Joshua and myself to the Doctors - Joshua to get immunised for his trip to Bali and me to get a skin tag removed (funny how it had never bothered me at all until my mother mentioned something about it hmmmmm). In the evening Zachary and I went to a meeting at school for the Presentation Ball next year.
Wednesday - Jacob had his first transition session at school. He absolutely loved spending time there, but was a bit concerned about missing kindergarten. Afterwards, he had his swimming lesson.
Did a few general things around the house, then while Joshua watched Jacob, headed off for a nap as I was working that evening.
Got up around 7:00PM, did dinner and headed off to work.
Thursday - Left work at 7:30AM and headed home. Grabbed a cuppa and got the boys to school - Joshua had his first Year 12 exam this morning, English. Pottered around the house until midday when I went to pick Joshua up from school and drop Jacob off at kindergarten. Back home to hit the sack zzzzzzzzz.
The boys caught the bus home and Joshua walked down and picked up Jacob from kinder.
Woke around 5:30PM and got dinner organised.  Headed off to kindergarten committee meeting at 7:30PM, got home just before midnight.
Friday - What a crazy morning! Dropped Zachary off at the hospital for his Hand Therapy appointment at 8:00AM, dropped Christian and Joshua at school, back to hospital to pick up Zachary, dropped Jacob at Kindergarten, dropped off Zachary at school, picked up Joshua and headed home - all before 10:15AM.  Put dinner in the slow cooker and had a sit down before heading off again.
Got Jacob from kindergarten at midday, made lunch, pottered around, picked up boys from school at 2:45PM. More pottering, served dinner and had a rather early night.
Saturday - See here
Sunday - We’ve got a hard rubbish collection in our area, so we tidied up the carport and put everything we wanted to get rid of on the nature strip so it could be picked up sometime after Monday.
In the afternoon, I headed out for a quiet wander around the shopping centre, where I picked up some cute little baskets and some ballet flats for $5.00!!! Got home, made dinner, played on the computer for a while and headed off to bed.

Day Twenty-Five - 30 day meme

Day 25 – your day, in great detail
Oh dear, what a day for this to come up. This may be a little embarrassing.
OK, it’s a Saturday morning. I was awoken by my phone ringing at 9:30 (yes, I was having a very nice sleep-in). It was work asking if I was available for a nightshift tonight, which I was.  I get all the details and get out of bed and make my way to the kitchen where I pop the kettle on. Off to the loo and then the bathroom to brush the fuzzies away.
Coffee in hand, I plonk myself down at the computer to check my mail and facebook :) I contemplate getting dressed, then decided that I would watch the finale of Project Runway season 8 first - it was getting annoying not being able to use my Google homepage for fear E! News would announce the winner. Settle down on my bed with coffee and raisin toast yummo!
Grrrrrr at who won - wasn’t my pick but I won’t share and spoil it. I’m usually pretty good at picking the winner. I picked season 7’s winner in the first episode!
Finally, I get out of my PJ’s and my body gets that nice hot shower. I save time by cleaning the shower while I’m in it - well, seriously, no one here else does it. Clothes on, kettle back on, stack the dishwasher and hit start on the washing machine. Coffee back in hand and butt back at computer where I busy myself “farming” and “fishing” - ok I was on facebook again!
Washing machine finishes it’s first of many loads, it’s raining so into the dryer the load goes.  Next load in the machine, make snacks for work - sandwich, tub of yoghurt and some assorted nuts - and store in fridge.
Christian’s friends turn up to stay over for the night and I head off to have a nap so I will be alert to work nightshift zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…………..
Wake up - something’s not right. Check the time - clock is blank, hang on.... TV is off?? What’s going on??? It’s still raining and the power is out. Crap, what time is it??? Get out of bed to check clock in the kitchen - 5:30PM. Darn it, I really wanted to sleep until 7:00PM. Find technology obsessed family wandering around like lost puppies.
Christian and friends head off to the supermarket to buy crap food for watching movies later - I’m hoping the power comes back on for them. Use iPhone to check facebook - honestly, just to see if anyone else is without power. Whewwww, it’s not just us. Boil water on stove in a saucepan and make coffee :) Watch Jacob amuse himself in the rain - yes, I got it on video, will post it when I finish this. Post smart arsed status on facebook via iPhone - “Looks like take away for dinner tonight. No power - no cooking” and the house lights up like a Christmas tree. Guess the powers back.
Phone call from work, my shift is cancelled - thank goodness I didn’t get to sleep until 7:00PM, I’d be up all night! Organise dinner by picking up the phone and calling pizza place, send Joshua and Jeff to pick up dinner. Kids devour pizza like they have never seen it before. Clean up/throw out empty boxes and plonk myself back down at the computer to blog. See this topic for the 30 day meme, oh crap!
